The hidden Swedish job market: why so many tech jobs never reach the big boards

There is a large slice of the Swedish tech job market you can’t see from Indeed or LinkedIn. Roles get posted to a company’s own career page, fill from there, and come down again — often before they’re ever syndicated to a big aggregator, and sometimes without being syndicated at all. If your whole search runs through the big boards, those roles simply don’t exist for you.

Why don’t these jobs reach the big boards?

Because posting to aggregators is optional, costs money or effort, and the best roles often fill before anyone bothers.

A few reasons the same roles never make the jump:

• The career page is the default. Every company has one; posting elsewhere is an extra, deliberate step that not everyone takes.
• Speed. A role that fills from the career page or a referral in a couple of weeks never needs to be advertised more widely.
• Cost and noise. Aggregators can mean paying for slots and wading through unqualified applications; plenty of teams skip it.
• Applicant-tracking systems. Most companies run their hiring through an ATS (Teamtailor, Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and friends). The role is live on that system, linked from the career page — and invisible to anyone not looking there.

Who does this hurt most?

International candidates — because the roles most likely to be English-friendly and sponsorship-friendly are exactly the ones on scale-up career pages, not the Swedish-heavy aggregator listings.

If you already speak Swedish and know the local scene, you fill the gap with your network. If you’ve just moved — or haven’t moved yet — you don’t have that network, and the boards you can search are the ones least likely to surface the roles that fit you. The hidden market isn’t a minor edge case for internationals; it’s often where most of the good roles are.

How do you reach the hidden market?

Watch the career pages directly. That’s the whole answer — the only question is whether you do it by hand or have something do it for you.

You can absolutely do it manually: pick the companies you’d want to work for, find their career pages, and check them regularly. It works, and it’s tedious, and it doesn’t scale past a couple of dozen companies before you stop keeping up.
