Junior developer jobs in Sweden for internationals: how the market really looks

The EnglishJobsSweden team · Updated

We read every Swedish tech job ad — English-friendliness, sponsorship signals and stated pay — so the numbers on this page come from the source, not a survey.

If you are a recent graduate, a career changer or a developer with a year of experience, and you are looking at Sweden from outside it, you deserve the real picture rather than an encouraging one. The real picture is that Swedish tech ads are written for people who already have a few years, that the junior share is small, and that a large part of junior hiring never goes through a job ad at all. None of that makes it impossible. It does mean the search for a first role looks different from the search for a fourth one, and this page is about that difference.

What share of Swedish tech ads are junior?

About 5% of the live Swedish tech ads we have read are pitched at juniors. Roughly 41% are senior or lead. The market, as advertised, is a senior market.

5%

of 3,604 live Swedish tech ads are junior roles, read ad by ad, updated 12 September 2026

The live seniority split, as a share of all the ads we have read:

  • Junior: 5% (196 ads)
  • Mid-level: 6% (215 ads)
  • Senior: 31% (1,129 ads)
  • Lead, staff or principal: 9% (337 ads)
  • No level stated: 48% (1,727 ads)

A large share of ads state no level at all, so read the junior figure as a floor on what is advertised as junior, not as the share of roles a junior could win. Some unlabelled ads are open to a strong graduate; many quietly expect three years. The years-of-experience line below is the better tell.

What “junior” looks like in a Swedish ad is worth knowing, because the word itself is used less than in the UK or the US. The tells are nyexaminerad (newly graduated), i början av din karriär (at the start of your career), junior utvecklare or simply utvecklare with no years attached, and a requirements list that reads “a degree in computer science or equivalent” and stops there. Ads that describe the team as one that will coacha or handleda you, meaning coach or mentor, are written by someone who has hired a junior before and knows what it costs. That is the employer you want.

How many years of experience do Swedish ads ask for?

Only about 21% of ads state a minimum number of years. Among those that do, the centre of gravity is three to five years, and ads asking for one year or less are rare.

Minimum years asked for, among the 770 live ads that state one:

  • 0–1 years: 42 ads (5% of those that state it)
  • 2–3 years: 204 ads (26% of those that state it)
  • 4–5 years: 348 ads (45% of those that state it)
  • 6+ years: 176 ads (23% of those that state it)

Two things to know about that line. First, Swedish ads treat the number as a description of the person they imagine rather than a legal threshold. An ad asking for three years will interview a strong candidate with two, and a consultancy will often round a thesis project and a summer job up to one. Second, it is a tell for the employer’s attitude: an ad that says “några års erfarenhet” (a few years’ experience) is flexible; one that says “minst fem års erfarenhet” (at least five years) is writing a job description around someone they have already met. The ads that ask for a year or less, 5% of those that state a number, are the ones written with a graduate in mind, and they are worth every minute of tailoring.

Why are there so few junior ads?

Because Swedish junior hiring mostly happens through programmes, internships and thesis projects rather than open ads, and because strong employment protection makes an employer slow to hire someone it cannot yet judge.

Sweden’s Employment Protection Act makes a permanent hire (tillsvidareanställning) a serious commitment, softened only by a probationary period (provanställning) of up to six months. Employers respond by front-loading the judgement: they take juniors from a summer internship (sommarjobb), a master’s thesis project (exjobb) or a structured trainee programme, where they have watched the person work for months. Those routes are advertised as programmes, in the spring, under names that no “junior developer” search will find. The consultancies then absorb a large share of what remains, hiring graduates in cohorts and placing them at clients, which is why so many Swedish developers’ first employer is a consultancy. What is left for the open ads is a thin layer, and it is the layer with the most competition.

How do you get a first developer job in Sweden?

Through the routes Swedish juniors use: trainee programmes, consultancies, internships and thesis projects, and, if you studied here, the twelve-month job-seeker permit. Open ads are the last route rather than the first.

  • Trainee programmes, traineeprogram. Large Swedish employers in banking, telecom, retail, consulting and utilities run one- to two-year rotations that start in August or September and take applications in the winter and spring. They are designed for graduates with no experience, and many run in English. Search the employer’s career page for the word, not the boards.
  • Consultancies as the entry point. They hire in volume, train, and place you where the work is. The trade-off is pay and choice of assignment, and IT consultancies as the way in covers who they are, what to check before signing, and when to leave.
  • Internships and thesis projects, praktik and exjobb. If you are studying in Sweden, a thesis project at a company is the single most reliable path to an offer, because the company has effectively run a six-month interview. Career services at KTH, Chalmers, Lund, Uppsala and Linköping list them.
  • The job-seeker permit after studies. Graduates of Swedish universities can stay up to twelve months to find work, and the first work-permit application is treated more gently than a fresh one from abroad. The job-seeker permit after studies is the month-by-month plan.
  • Small companies, via their own career pages. A fifteen-person startup that needs a second frontend developer writes “developer,” not “junior,” and posts it on its own site. This is where the unlabelled ads come from, and the hidden Swedish job market is about finding them.
  • Open junior ads. Apply to every one that fits, as the last of six channels rather than the whole search. The Stockholm and Gothenburg hubs show the live ads by role.

Can you compete for a junior role without Swedish?

Yes at product companies and international scale-ups, and rarely at the consultancies and public bodies that do most junior hiring. The language line matters more at the junior end than anywhere else.

The reason is structural. A senior hire is bought for a specific skill and can be slotted into an English-speaking team; a junior is bought for potential and placed wherever there is capacity, which at a consultancy is often a Swedish-speaking client. The ads most open to an English-only junior are therefore the product companies, which are also the ads with the most competition from Swedish graduates who speak English. Three things move the odds. State a real Swedish level on the CV in CEFR terms and show it is rising; even A2 with classes booked reads as commitment. Lead with something built and shipped, since a repository with a README a recruiter can read in a minute beats a list of courses. And apply in the language of the ad, with a short personligt brev (cover letter) that names the team’s product, not the company’s values. How to read the language line itself is in Swedish language requirements for tech jobs. The CV conventions, meaning experience above education, one page and results rather than responsibilities, are in the Swedish CV guide.

One more word about permits. A first work permit from abroad requires an employer willing to start the application and a salary at the level Migrationsverket sets, which most junior tech salaries do meet but which makes an employer think twice about an unproven hire. The graduate route removes that friction, which is why a master’s in Sweden is, for many people, the most reliable junior job strategy there is. The digest tags each ad with its seniority and the sponsorship signal, so a junior who needs a permit sees the short list rather than the long one.

Frequently asked questions

Are there junior developer jobs in Sweden for internationals?

Yes, but fewer than the headline job counts suggest. Only a small share of live Swedish tech ads are pitched at juniors, and most junior hiring runs through trainee programmes, internships, thesis projects and consultancy cohorts rather than open ads. Product companies and international scale-ups are the most open to an English-speaking junior.

How many years of experience do Swedish developer jobs require?

Most ads do not state a minimum. Among those that do, three to five years is the centre of gravity and ads asking for one year or less are rare. Swedish employers treat the number as a description rather than a threshold, so a strong candidate a year short is usually still interviewed.

How do you get your first developer job in Sweden?

Use the routes Swedish juniors use: trainee programmes (traineeprogram) at large employers, consultancies that hire graduates in cohorts, internships and thesis projects (exjobb) if you study in Sweden, and small companies' own career pages. Treat open junior ads as the last of several channels, not the whole search.

Can international students stay in Sweden to find a job after graduating?

Graduates of Swedish universities can apply for a residence permit to look for work for up to twelve months after a bachelor's or master's degree, and their first work-permit application is exempt from the usual salary threshold. Apply before the study permit expires. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can you get a junior developer job in Sweden without speaking Swedish?

At product companies and international scale-ups, yes; at the consultancies and public bodies that do most junior hiring, rarely, because juniors are placed wherever there is capacity and that is often a Swedish-speaking client. State a real Swedish level in CEFR terms, lead with something built and shipped, and apply in the language of the ad.
