The 12-month job-seeker permit after studying in Sweden: a month-by-month plan

A graduate holding a twelve-month calendar, walking toward an office door

You finished a degree in Sweden on a student permit. The good news is that Sweden gives you a year to turn that into a job and, since June 2026, waives the salary threshold on your first work permit. The bad news is that the year is fixed, cannot be extended, and most graduates spend the first four months of it doing the wrong things. Here is the rulebook, then a month-by-month plan.

What is the job-seeker permit after studies in Sweden?

A residence permit of up to twelve months after a bachelor’s or master’s degree (twelve to eighteen after a doctorate) to look for work or start a company, applied for before your study permit runs out. It cannot be extended.

Its Swedish name is uppehållstillstånd för att söka arbete efter slutförda studier, the residence permit to look for work after completed studies. As of September 2026, Migrationsverket’s page puts the length at up to twelve months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates and twelve to eighteen months after doctoral studies, and states plainly that the permit cannot be extended (går inte att förlänga). You apply from inside Sweden while your study permit is still valid, so the clock on the paperwork starts before the clock on the job search.

Who qualifies, and what does it cost?

You need a completed programme with at least two semesters of higher education in Sweden, and proof that you can support yourself for the whole permit period, which is SEK 10,656 a month for 2026 applications.

The conditions on the English page and the Swedish page, as of September 2026:

  • The whole programme completed, every course passed, shown with a degree certificate or a Ladok extract carrying the completion note. Chalmers’ residence-permit page adds that the degree must be formally awarded, so order the certificate the day your last grade lands.
  • At least two semesters of higher education in Sweden.
  • Maintenance of SEK 10,656 a month for the entire permit period (10,584 for 2025 applications), plus SEK 4,440 for a spouse and SEK 2,664 per child. Twelve months alone is roughly SEK 128,000 in the account when you apply.
  • A fee of SEK 1,500 per adult and SEK 750 per child.
  • Health insurance, if your total continuous stay in Sweden will be under a year.

We read SEK 10,656 from the Swedish page on 8 September 2026. A search snippet of the same page showed “13 000 kronor per månad”, from an older or newer version we cannot identify. Check the live page before you move money into the account.

Can you work on the job-seeker permit?

Migrationsverket’s page says your adult family members may work. It does not say the same thing explicitly about you before a work-permit application is filed, so ask them in writing before you take freelance or part-time work.

What is clear, from the students-who-have-found-work page, is that once an employer has filed your work-permit application from inside Sweden, you may work for that employer while the decision is pending. The practical upshot: an employer who is willing to hire you should file the same week you sign. There is no advantage in waiting.

Do not read the study permit’s work rights across, either. Those changed on 11 June 2026, with a 15-hour weekly cap during semesters for new permits, per Migrationsverket’s May 2026 notice, and they belong to a separate permit with separate rules.

Your first work permit is exempt from the salary threshold

If you hold a student or job-seeker permit when the application is filed, your first Swedish work permit is exempt from the statutory salary requirement of SEK 34,470 a month that applies to everyone else as of June 2026, as long as the pay is at collective-agreement level for the role.

This is the sentence to remember from this guide. The law that took effect on 1 June 2026 raised the bar for work permits to 90% of the Swedish median salary, SEK 34,470 a month from 16 June 2026, per Migrationsverket’s June notice, and junior tech salaries can sit uncomfortably close to it. The exemption for graduates of Swedish universities, set out on the same students page, removes that risk for you specifically. The employer still has to pay at the level of the collective agreement or industry practice, still has to provide the insurance, and still has to have advertised the role; what falls away is the number that would otherwise sink a graduate offer.

The mechanics, as of September 2026: you apply from inside Sweden without leaving; the fee is SEK 2,200; the page says roughly 75% of complete applications are decided within four months; and you may work for that employer while you wait. Tell recruiters this in the first conversation. Many still believe a graduate hire means a threshold problem, and the belief costs you interviews. The wider rules are in work permit sponsorship in Sweden.

A month-by-month plan for the twelve months

Fix the CV and build the target list in the first two months, apply with volume and fit in months three to six, use consultancies and trainee programmes as the bridge in seven to nine, and treat ten to twelve as filing time, not searching time.

Months 1–2: the CV, the list, the career pages

Rewrite the CV into Swedish format first: one to two pages, experience above education unless you have none, results rather than duties, and no photo. The conventions are in how to write a Swedish CV. Then build a list of forty to sixty target employers: the companies whose stacks you actually know, in the cities you can live in, weighted toward employers with a record of hiring internationally (the companies directory is a start). Apply on their career pages rather than through the aggregators, since most Swedish roles appear there first and many only there. Register on Platsbanken while you are at it.

Months 3–6: volume with fit, people, and Swedish A1–A2

This is the block where most of the offers come from, so it should be most of the applications, each one still tailored to the ad. The junior market is thinner than the senior one; the numbers and the tactics are in junior developer jobs in Sweden for internationals. Alongside applications: go to the meetups for your stack in Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö, ask former lecturers and thesis supervisors who they know, and use the alumni network your university keeps. Start Swedish now, aiming at A1 to A2 by month six. Nobody will hire you for it, but “I am at A2 and taking classes” reads very differently from “I plan to learn.”

Months 7–9: consultancies and trainee programmes as the bridge

If the product companies have not converted by month seven, widen the funnel. Sweden’s IT consultancies hire graduates at volume, place them at large clients, and are used to the permit paperwork; the model, the names and the catches are in IT consultancies in Sweden as the first job. Large employers also run trainee programmes with fixed start dates, so check the career pages of the banks, telecoms, automotive and engineering groups for their next intake, because the application windows are short and set months ahead.

Months 10–12: the deadline math

Your permit ends on a date. The work-permit application must be filed before that date, or you are applying from abroad under the ordinary rules, without the graduate exemption. Working backwards, as of September 2026:

  1. The students page says about 75% of complete applications are decided within four months. The highly-qualified-workers page says 75% within one month for occupations in SSYK groups 1–3, which covers most software roles. Plan on the four-month figure and be pleasantly surprised.
  2. Filing is what protects you, not the decision. Once filed, you may work for that employer while you wait, so an offer signed in month eleven is fine if HR files the same week.
  3. An offer in month twelve with a slow HR department is where people fall off. Ask, at offer stage, who at the company files and how fast. If nobody knows, that is your answer.
  4. If you get an offer in month four, file in month four. The exemption applies to your first application while you hold the permit; there is nothing to gain from waiting.

Which university career services are worth using?

Most of the large universities run a careers unit that international graduates can still use after graduation, and several have permit pages that spell out the twelve-month rule.

We could not find a university-wide careers unit at Umeå, only the business school’s, so ask your department. Wherever you studied, one visit is worth it for the employer contacts the office holds. The digest reads the career pages for you; the alumni address book is yours to work.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the job-seeker permit after studies in Sweden?

Up to twelve months after a bachelor's or master's degree, and twelve to eighteen months after doctoral studies, according to Migrationsverket as of September 2026. You apply from inside Sweden before your study permit expires, and the permit cannot be extended. This is general information, not legal advice.

How much money do you need for the job-seeker permit in Sweden?

For applications made in 2026 Migrationsverket asks for SEK 10,656 a month for the whole permit period, plus SEK 4,440 for a spouse and SEK 2,664 per child, and an application fee of SEK 1,500 per adult. Check the current figure on Migrationsverket's page before you apply, because it is updated yearly.

Do graduates of Swedish universities have to meet the work-permit salary threshold?

No, not on the first application. If you hold a student or job-seeker residence permit when the work-permit application is filed, you are exempt from the statutory salary requirement, SEK 34,470 a month for other applicants as of June 2026. The pay must still be at the level of the collective agreement or industry practice for the role.

Can you work in Sweden while looking for a job on the job-seeker permit?

Migrationsverket's page states that adult family members may work, but is not explicit about the permit holder before a work-permit application is filed, so ask Migrationsverket in writing before you take work. Once an employer has filed your work-permit application from inside Sweden, you may work for that employer while the decision is pending.

What happens if the job-seeker permit runs out before you find a job?

The permit cannot be extended, so you would leave Sweden and apply for any future work permit from abroad under the ordinary rules, without the graduate exemption. The application only has to be filed, not decided, before the permit ends, so an offer late in the year still works if the employer files immediately.
